ZAIRE SPEAR MONIES

WEBSITE DIRECTORY       ORDERING INFORMATION       AFRICAN ETHNOGRAPHIC MONIES       BOOKS: AFRICAN CURRENCIES

Spades, knives, and spears have served as the inspiration for currency items throughout Africa. Aside from one Nigerian spear type, knife and spear monies come from Zaire (Congo). The pieces below were selected from a much larger group offered by a supplier.

ILLUSTRATIONS & CONDITION:    Images are from a flatbed scanner, so I have shown only the blades, and only top and bottom for very long ones. Where I have more than one specimen of a type, scans are of typical examples. All blades are intact with only light rust. I am confident you will like these pieces, and will pay shipping both ways if you are not satisfied.

SHIPPING CHARGE:    Spears are expensive to ship due to carrier oversize charges. Usually the shafts are nothing special, and I can send you just the spear-heads and any shaft ends or wrappings, and you can purchase a dowell or cut a sapling to recreate the shaft. For intact spears, there is a $4 per-order box charge for one or more spears. Cheapest shipping is USPS Priority Mail at $11.65 to $29.30, depending on zone, for one or more spears to U.S. destinations. You can avoid or amortize these high charges by: a) Ordering more than one spear, or b) Ordering other merchandise which will fit in a 6 foot by 4 inch box, or c) Authorizing us to remove the spear head(s) so smaller packaging can be used (total shipping usually under $10).    Many countries outside North America:Due to high shipping charges by private carrier it is not practical to ship fewer than 10 items at a time, unless we ship the spear-heads only, without shafts.

CENTRAL AFRICAN DOWRY SPEARS

This is a class of spears that are both functional weapons and dowry items, though some may be strictly currency items. There are numerous tribal variations. Ballarini in Black Africa's Traditional Arms p.104 shows two types, along with the Mbole type as "Lance/Currency" although the latter is clearly too fancy to be a functional weapon. Ijzerwerk van centraal-afrika by H. Westerdijk, chapter VII "Ijzergeld" (Iron money) shows some types, and classifies others as status weapons. Jean Elsen mentions currency and status uses for various types in his Beaute Fatale: Armes d'Afrique Centrale. A group of bound-together Mbudja spear points, p.101 Item #116 is captioned "pointes de lance-monnaies" with acquisition dates 1933, 1939 and suggests a general currency use for this type, at least.

The blade shape, shaft type (wood or iron), and shaft end (wood, iron in various shapes) distinguish tribal types.
