| Coinage of the Pyu and Mon Kingdoms of Burma, Thailand, Laos & Vietnam regions c. AD 350-1000 |
| Mihailovs, V., Krisadaolarn, R & Lubo-Lesnichenko, E. | Siamese Coins: From Funan To The Fifth Reign A rich sourcebook for the study of Thai numismatics in general, and a functional catalog for three series currently lacking comprehensive coverage: The Mon / Pyu symbolic coinage, the "ingot" coinages of Northern Thailand (tok, lat, flower, c'ieng, etc.) and pod-duang, or bullet coinage. For the first time excellent color photos and descriptive data are given for nearly all known types and varieties, even while questions of attribution remain. There are fascinating discoveries in the flat coinage of 1835-1910 as well as good, non-comprehensive coverage of south Thai jokoh and other tin tokens, Prakab, early gambling tokens, and Patani-Kelantan gold. The inclusion of old and new forgeries and fantasies, and summaries of Thai collector opinion and market wisdom are two features very useful to the Western collector. The catalog plates are well worth the price of the book, though its main contents are brief political and monetary histories of Siam and 130pp of early travellers' accounts, Royal monetary proclamations, and other documents, all translated to English. Bibliographic notes throughout point to deeper discussions of topics. 253p+148cpl, hc, 8x11"?, 2008 DUE Fall 2008 Please advise your intrest now for a pre-publication discount. | |

| Yin Zheng Min | Zhong guo xi zang qian bi tu lu (Illustrated Catalog of the Money of China's Tibet) Comprehensive variety/date catalog of Tibet & Malla coins and paper, all illustrated with color photos. Generally a finer breakdown than KM, with 91 examples of Gaden Tanka (Y13), for example. Specialized western works such as Bertsch on Srangs, Gabrisch on Szechuan Rupees, and Bertsch or Narbeth on paper are still better, but there are undoubtedly discoveries to be made here by even the most advanced collector. Chinese, but very little text and some photos use arrows or drawings to highlight differences. Best single Tibet catalog to date. | Tibet Autonomous Region Numismatic Society, ed. | Currency of Tibet, China This huge, 492p, 8.5x11.5" hardcover is merely the photos volume in a projected 3-volume set! The best features are the many dies (205 of them!), printing blocks and banknote oddities, weights (multiple views), scales, a gold bar, sycee, counterstamps, mint errors, coin jewelry, tamgas, and other odd objects, but the basic coin presentation is disappointing. No doubt close study of the hundreds of photos will pay off here and there, but there is no detailed breakdown of varieties, nor analysis of complex series such as Gaden tankas. The banknote photos are gorgeous, but the coin photos and specimen quality are highly variable, the coppers being mostly too dark. All photos are color and the presentation is lavish. Little text, but all Chinese, including captions. Brief English preface and contents page. Four historical maps. 2002 One day we will see Nicholas Rhodes' book do a far better job at half the price, but if you can afford it, you will have fun with this book meanwhile. | 150.00 |
